Cairo

Few cities in the world boast a history as rich and varied as Cairo’s. Where else can you see 6,000-year-old pyramids, the Sphinx, Roman ruins, exquisitely carved mosques and fortresses from the city’s heyday as the cultural center of the Islamic world, catacombs and even a camel market All this plus a vibrant political and social culture, noisy, bustling bazaars packed into ancient, jumbled streets and the city’s pervasive aromas (delicious, evocative and occasionally repulsive).

Though just a few miles from Memphis — the capital of ancient Egypt — and the pyramids at Giza, most of Cairo dates from the Islamic period, and today the city remains the most important center of Sunni Muslim scholarship in the world. Must-see places include Memphis and the pyramids of Saqqara, the Egyptian museum (containing an outstanding collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts), the Islamic Museum with its work of art from throughout the Islamic world, the city’s oldest bazaar — Khan el Khalily — and the fascinating streets of Old Cairo. And, of course, you simply can’t go to Cairo without visiting Giza’s wondrous pyramids and Sphinx. Built between 2600 and 2520 BC by the kings of the 4th Dynasty, the complex is one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

The Pyramids of Giza: The most famous structure in the world was built by King Cheops (IV Dynasty) around 2650 B.C., on an area of 54600 m. Its height now is 137 ms (original height: 146 ms). Almost 2.5 million blocks of stone were put into building this pyramid, which measure 230 ms square at the base. All this, however, dwindles when compared to the precision and astounding ability of the ancient Egyptian in building this pyramid. Close to the eastern flank of the Pyramid of Cheops lie three small pyramids dedicated either to his wives or family members.

Egyptian Museum: North of El Tahrir square, it’s open from 9 AM. To 5:00 PM. daily, but closes between 11:15 AM. And 1:30 PM. on Fridays.

The Sphinx: The Sphinx is one of the best known monuments on earth and dates back over 4,500 years to the Old Kingdom and the time of king Khafre – builder of the second largest pyramid on the Giza plateau on Cairo’s outskirts. The head of the Sphinx probably depicts Khafre, while the body is that of a recumbent lion.

The Sphinx is about 73.5 meters in length. It was originally sculptured from a limestone outcrop and, for most of its history; the Sphinx has been at least partly covered in sand. The first recorded clearing took place in the 18th Dynasty when a prince, who later became the pharaoh Thutmose IV, ordered that the sand be removed. This happened after he supposedly had a dream in which he was told that he would become pharaoh if he cleared the Sphinx.
